I miss the thunderstorms in North Texas. Spring is here and with it comes the rain. Growing up I could smell the rain coming. It smelled clean and full of energy. Sitting outside in the soft carpet grass, I would watch the wall cloud move closer, pushing out the bright blue sky with full grey clouds. The wall created a distinct line across the horizon separating a gorgeous bright day from the ominous storm on its way. Streaks of lightening would stretch from cloud to earth in the distance. As the wall approached deep rumblings accompanied the bright lights that touched down. Eventually the wall would be close enough to hear the crack of the lightening and the wind would pick up. A few drops fall, and then the sky opens up. Buckets pouring from the dark roiling clouds that have pushed all the light of day off the map. Sitting under the covered porch I marvel at the power of a storm. The cool air, the bright flashes, the kaboom of thunder surrounding me. And when the rain stops and the blue sky reappears, the sweet smell of grass and dirt and flowers arrive. #solsc

Nature can provoke such strong memories. “Growing up I could smell the rain coming”. So simple but clear and powerful statement. Thanks for sharing!

Love this post. I can feel everything you’re talking about, I’m also from Texas so I know what that feels like but reading it just brought it back to life.

I love, love, love thunderstorms! When I lived in Kuala Lumpur I experienced the strongest storms I had ever seen. The drama of storms always overwhelms me and I love the way you described the build up!

You brought back some lovely memories. I'll never forget the time I snuck out to the living room to watch the thunderstorm all by myself. With the first bolt of lightning that lit up the room, I realized my entire family had beat me to it.
